OSR Guide For The Perplexed Questionnaire

OSR Guide For The Perplexed Questionnaire
this was Zak's idea, by the way

1. One article or blog entry that exemplifies the best of the Old School Renaissance for me:

Joesky the Dungeon Brawler's A TABLE FOR THE BAD GUYS!!!!!!!.  Joesky's aesthetic may not be for everyone, but I read his work as the comical presentation of a serious attempt to engage with the big questions of the scene.

2. My favorite piece of OSR wisdom/advice/snark:

James Raggi's "I can't find any players!"

3. Best OSR module/supplement:

Oh, man, the compilation of the first four issues of Fight On! is so sweet, my friends.

4. My favorite house rule (by someone else):

James Maliszewski's liquid courage rule (from here):
Liquid Courage
Once per session, characters who possess strong alcoholic beverages may partake of them to gain an additional 1D6 hit points that lasts for the duration of the next combat, after which these "spiritous hit points" disappear should they not have already been used up in the combat.

5. How I found out about the OSR:

I'm been sitting here struggling with how to answer this one.  I think the scene kinda bubbled up into existence around me.  One day I just noticed some overlap between the people at the OD&D forums and Dragonsfoot and Knights & Knaves.  Some of these people didn't just want to run the old games exactly as they had in their youths.  Then stuff like Castles & Crusades and Swords & Wizardry and Labyrinth Lord and OSRIC helped imagine a path forward.  At some point there was just a critical mass of people who wanted to take the old stuff in new directions.

6. My favorite OSR online resource/toy:

Alex Schroeder's Links to Wisdom wiki.  Add good stuff to it, please!

7. Best place to talk to other OSR gamers:

Despite it's limitations, I've been digging twitter recently.  If you're there and I don't follow you, please let me know!

8. Other places I might be found hanging out talking games:

In the face of the Google+ sunset, I'm trying mewe.com, but I'm not sure if I get it yet.  I'm also trying http://diyrpg.freeforums.net/ though I'm not convinced going back to message boards is the right solution.

9. My awesome, pithy OSR take nobody appreciates enough:

Level limits for non-humans are good and fun.

10. My favorite non-OSR RPG:

Well, the only non-old school game I can see on my shelves right now is Nathan D. Paoletta's World Wide Wrestling RPG, a Powered by the Apocalypse story game that takes the kayfabe side of wrestling seriously.  But I haven't played it.

11. Why I like OSR stuff:

Gygax and Arneson hit on something magical, but there's no good reason why that magical needs to be bottle and sold to us by a big corporation.  There's no reason why a central committee needs to set an agenda for the hobby.  As a kid new to the hobby I didn't understand how slavishly lapping up the offerings of TSR shaped my view of what D&D could be, what behaviors (good or ill) it reinforced, what doors it closed.  Fantasy roleplaying is an open-ended, artistic, mythological activity between human beings.  We don't need an official imprimatur to make that work, in fact such approval inevitable cuts us off from some avenues of exploration.  Within the vague concept of "games like this," the OSR is a diffuse, non-centralized, network of individual exploration and group interchange, respecting the right of the individual soul to dream while keeping us connected to each other.

Also, I am not over wizards and dragons and never will be.

12. Two other cool OSR things you should know about that I haven't named yet:

The FLAILSNAILS Conventions and the network of games that resulted from them continue to be one of the coolest bits of nerdery I have ever had the pleasure to participate in.  And I love the attitude of good faith and trust in our fellow players that lie behind them.

Random Character Advancement Charts are lots of fun.  Here's a central storehouse of them, but their are others out there.

13. If I could read but one other RPG blog but my own it would be:

Dang.  This is the hardest question to answer of the bunch.  As a practical matter, I steal more from Zak S. than anyone else, so I guess I gotta go with dndwithpornstars.blogspot.com.

14. A game thing I made that I like quite a lot is:

I think Broodmother Skyfortress turned out nicely.

15. I'm currently running/playing:

Nothing.  I need to get my shit together.

16. I don't care whether you use ascending or descending AC because:

I can always just ask you what armor you are wearing and what your Dex score is, or tell you what you need to roll to-hit.

17. The OSRest picture I could post on short notice:

This is a player-made illo of a key point in my last campaign, which, for a number of reasons, would never have happened (the whole campaign, not just this moment) without the old school scene.  Illo by Nick Kuntz, one of the many fine people who took the time to make the Vyzor campaign something special.

PUBG LITE Now Available In 4 More Countries

About two weeks ago, PUBG Corp. made a post regarding PUBG PC Lite version and that it was launched in Thailand for testing. But now PUBG Lite official facebook page posted that it will be available in 4 more countries.....

Through their official facebook page, they announced that the beta version will be released to four more regions in South-east Asia. The regions are Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines and Singapore.

*If you donot know about PUBG Lite version, you can check out my post about it in full detail here.*

Back to topic, they also mentioned that the beta version will be released on 14th Feb. 2019 while the pre-download for the above given regions will start a day ago i.e. 13th Feb. 2019.

So if you belong to these countries, you are going to taste Chicken Dinner soon.

But if you donot belong to these countries, then there is no need to worry because for now PUBG is keeping the regions limited only to check whether the games are running smoothly or not. Once they are assured, they will release it globally.

You can visit the official PUBG LITE facebook page here.

Some Details On The (Tentative) Gaming Group

The Game
It looks like the first game we will be playing is the Pathfinder Beginner Box.  It is probably one of the best introductory products out there.  I can see why Paizo has a strong fan base.  If you do not own or know the details on the Pathfinder Beginner Box then check out the video below.

The box I bought was one of the newer ones so it also includes the Transitions booklet for going on to the full game after reaching 5th level.  Another option is using the E6 Pathfinder rules from the P6 Codex site.  Additional rules options include stuff from the Beginner Box Player Pack, the Beginner Box GM Kit, and various resources from the posts at EdOWar's Blog.  I also have other games I am going to pitch; SteamCraft, Dead Reign, and Dungeon Crawl Classics RPG to name a few.

Frequency
Our initial thoughts are game sessions every 2 weeks but that may change.  Maybe we will be able to play more often?

Location
We have not actually discussed it but this will, probably be the easiest decision to make.

DM
As it stands now the DM duties are going to rotate between myself and Alex.  Maybe someone else will give it a shot later?

More later as decisions are made...

5 Tips For Boosting Virtual Economies

Over the past year I've been helping mobile freemium developers (who are NativeX clients) increase retention and monetization, and I've noticed some tips and tricks around virtual economies that can help boost revenues. Here are 5 tips that should help your game make more money.

Don't overwhelm the player

There are numerous studies about how overwhelming consumers leads to less revenue. Probably the most famous of these studies is the classic jam in a grocery store study http://www.columbia.edu/~ss957/articles/Choice_is_Demotivating.pdf. The cliff notes (or spark notes) version is when 24 jams displayed for a taste test at a supermarket, 60% of customers stopped and 3% of those purchased but when 6 jams were displayed, 40% of customers stopped and 30% purchased. So how should mobile developers display content? Display a small amount of virtual items initially (around 6) and then hint at more content that'll unlock after players achieve a new level or similar. Why 6ish? Take notes from online retailers (specifically Amazon) and how they display search results. There's a reason they only typically show 4-7 search results on a screen without scrolling (keep in mind this is dependent on the customer screen resolution). This way, players aren't overwhelmed but they will understand that there's more to your game than just those 6 items.  Take this screenshot from Happy Street for example. A silhouette is a great way to hint to the player of new content.

Make the store easy to understand, navigate and use

This seems like an obvious point, but if your game has hundreds or thousands of items it can get complex and confusing very quickly. A good developer to look at is Gameloft. They have the budget and time to make their menu UX easy and appealing. Take their latest Heroes of Order & Chaos for example. They use scrolling menu to reduce the clutter.

And look at another similar game in a similar genre. At first I didn't know where to click, and I still have no idea what the percentages are towards the middle of the screenshot.

When you select Equip it just has a single sliding menu with only 2 items per equipment slot. The UX could greatly be improved, and they could offer more items per slot. Which is a great segue into my next point.

Have massive amounts of virtual items

Stereotypically speaking your game should have hundreds or thousands of virtual items in order to create a freemium success. There are outliers to this rule like Temple Run, but if you have more sinks in your game in theory it'll increase revenue as long as you follow the points mentioned earlier. It's important to offer items in all price ranges and to different types of players. One group of players might be more interested in vanity or aesthetically altering items, another group may want a competitive advantage and another might want to speed up the rate of progress. It's important to offer enough goods so players always have something else to buy.

Lead the player to your virtual store

If you've been to Disneyland have you ever noticed how after riding a major attraction you somehow end up in their gift shop? This didn't happen by accident. Exiting players into a store after a ride increased revenues. If you have a game with rounds, battles or levels don't be afraid to lead the player to the virtual store to spend some of that hard earned currency. However, you don't want to push players into making a purchase so make it easy to get out of the store and back into the action. There's a fine line between upselling and annoying and every game and audience is at least slightly different.

Make the first purchase option something with incredible value

This is a relatively newer concept and one that's been blogged about already, but we'll mention it one more time for good measure. Getting someone to convert and pay in freemium is possibly the most challenging task, but once someone has made a purchase the odds of them becoming a returning purchaser is so much higher. A popular example is the counterfeit machine in Jetpack Joyride that'll permanently double coins earned, but obviously you should think of something new, original and/or fits with better with the context of your game.

If you'd like to talk about this or any other games you can find me here at my blog or on Twitter.

Kolgrima - A Tour Of Trolls

For my first Tour of Trolls post, I decided to go with Kolgrima, our newest warlock.

When she went through CID I was utterly meh on her and was too focused on all the other changes to the faction during the few playtest games I was able to conduct and report on the forum.  I had no idea how wrong I was about her!

Even when she came out I didn't really dojo with her, all the other changes really commanded my attention until it came time to find a tournament pair for the inevitable Madrak1 list I had cooked up.

I really think I've got a winner with this list, it pairs great with Madrak1 Band of Heroes and it's frankly terrifying in its own right:

    War Room Army

Trollblood - A Song of Ice & Fire
    Theme: The Power of Dhunia
    3 / 3 Free Cards 75 / 75 Army

Kolgrima Stonetruth, Winter Witch - WB: +28
    - Trollkin Runebearer - PC: 0
    - Dire Troll Mauler - PC: 15 (Battlegroup Points Used: 15)
    - Earthborn Dire Troll - PC: 14 (Battlegroup Points Used: 13)
    - Earthborn Dire Troll - PC: 14
    - Mulg the Ancient - PC: 22
    - Troll Axer - PC: 10

    Northkin Shaman - PC: 0
    Northkin Shaman - PC: 0

    Croak Raiders - Leader & 9 Grunts: 16
    Krielstone Bearer & Stone Scribes - Leader & 5 Grunts: 9
    - Stone Scribe Elder - PC: 3

    THEME: The Power of Dhunia

    The Theory Behind the List

I wanted something that could answer gunlines, especially Cygnar with Haley3 Grave Diggers coming up as a particularly scary boogeyman in the meta.   I think Kolgrima clearly prefers having a classic Troll Beast Brick given that she gets an incredible amount of use out of the New Mulg™.  This means we're going to be playing Power of Dhunia (PoD), which really limits our infantry choices.

The problem with nearly all Power of Dhunia (PoD) lists is that if your opponent has more than one infantry unit, it's very easy for your opponent to bog down a big beast brick and take you down, and the Runeshapers you can take as your own infantry just don't do very well against a lot of other opposing dudes.

My eureka moment was realizing that the single minions unit we can take with the new theme changes really can change how PoD plays.  Farrow Brigands, Nyss Hunters, and Croak Raiders all seem to be strong choices as a ranged anti-infantry option.  I already owned some Croaks from MK2 and they were both the cheapest option (once you consider the near mandatory Brigand Warlord) and they were recently buffed to POW 11 on their guns and given Pathfinder natively.

What's better is that Kolgrima really turns these guys on as an anti-infantry option with her spell Cursed Fate.  The Croaks become effectively RAT 8 and it doesn't matter what armor your target infantry has, they just take an auto point of damage when hit!

Things like Iron Fang Pikemen, Dawnguard Sentinels, or Houseguard Halberdiers, or Banes under the Wraith Engine Aura that would all normally be a huge problem for a PoD beast brick to deal with suddenly melt away under these guns.

But wait, there's more! Kolgrima has an insane SP10 POW12 spell that has effectively Signs and Portents for attack and damage. With Mulg as a quasi arc node, you can cast out multiple Cursed Fates on different units and then simply spray them all down.  She even deals with nearly impossible to take down at range troops like Satyxis Raiders since she's using a spell, not a ranged attack.

If this is all that Kolgrima did, she'd already be a strong caster for any PoD list given that she really helps take down infantry that would otherwise give you fits, but there's still more!

Kolgrima can build a cloud wall in trolls, where playing in PoD lets you take Northkin Shaman as free solo options, which can further extend your cloud wall.  On top of that there is Kolgrima's feat, which is effectively a Hard-No on guns: any enemies in her control area when she feats can't make ranged attacks! On top of this they get pushed 2" directly away from her, lose Pathfinder, Eyeless Sight, and Flight.

She can be a very strong answer to things like Haley 3 Grave Diggers and can really help deliver a full Troll Beast Brick, possibly even giving you the alpha due to the cloud wall.  This was all the theory I had going in, and here's what I realized on the table.

    My Results

I've played this list into two Khador lists: Irusk2 with 30 Iron Fang Pikemen + Conquest and an Old Witch 2 list with 7 heavies in Jaws of the Wolf.  I won both games on scenario, despite both lists being wildly different.

Gamer Dad's have to go to extreme measures to get our games in some times!

Against Irusk2 we played Standoff.  Irusk2 can answer the cloud wall with his feat, but I was fortunate enough to be able to go first in our game.  This enabled me to use the Croaks and Mulg's arc node ability to wipe almost 20 Pikemen from the table on my second turn.  All the while I was slowly scoring points, and by turn 3, I was able to deny my opponent from scoring any points at all, letting me get ahead a little.  Once my opponents first 20 pikemen were dead, I was able to send my beasts into his Colossal and get ahead on piece trades while staying up a little on points and eventually his remaining pikemen unit was too busy trying to deal with the beasts in the only zone he could score to stop me from scoring elsewhere to win via 5CP.  I think the matchup is harder for Kolgrima if she can't go first, but it's still doable if you position properly.

Against Old Witch 3 I was facing down 2x Marauders, 2x Juggernauts, 1 Spriggan, and 2 Marshalled Destroyers on the Pit 2 scenario.

I was forced to go second and used my clouds to protect most of my heavies and my Croaks.  My opponent had to either walk into my threat ranges or just toe the zones for his turn 2, he opted to just toe the zones with heavies and some infantry, not realizing she could get into a position to feat him out of all the zones.

I was able to live the dream in this game and line it up so Kolgrima was in the center of the board and had her feat push every enemy model out of all the zones, with me sending in an Earthborn to kill an objective to get 4 CP's on the bottom of Turn 2!  From here out I would be fighting to come up ahead against 7 heavies to 4 Heavies + 1 Light, but when my opponent went in on Mulg with a Boundless Charged + 3 Focus Spriggan, Mulg was able to Primal Rage and get a very lucky Crit Slam to send the Spriggan away. This swung the game from an attrition race for me to score the last CP's as his heavy advantage came to bear to an easy victory on my part.  I still think I would be able to pull out a win with how the board position was, but it would have been dicey.

    Conclusions

Kolgrima feels really, really strong especially as a pair to a troop heavy Madrak1 list that I'm currently running.  She's a quasi-control caster with LOS denial and shooting denial, as well as a feat that can really help you get ahead on scenario.  All the other changes we got in CID helped her list immensely: Arcane Repeater on the Runebearer and the Stone generating its own Fury really help her spend her 7 fury down on her feat turn where you can largely use distance to keep her safe from assassination.  I haven't even really had to make use of her Owl's Wisdom spell denial, but she can do it to herself to prevent any spell assassinations when you feat to deny shooting, and use distance to keep yourself safe from melee threats.

I'm sure Kolgrima can be built to deliver an infantry or balanced Troll list if you wanted, though it certainly seems like right now she's best using Power of Dhunia and a shooting minion unit to support the beast brick.   She's definitely got a lot of power and options for us to explore going forward, and I look forward to experimenting with her more.

Sniper Elite 1 High Compressed Pc Game| High-Compress.Com

Sniper Elite 1 High Compressed Pc Game

Elite Sniper is a third-person shooter that involves elements of first-person shooter and stealth. To reinforce the stealth aspect, there is a percentage camouflage index that shows the visibility of the Fairburne player's character. Fairburne uses several World War II weapons, including sniper rifles, silent pistols, machine guns, light machine guns, an anti-tank weapon and hand grenades that can also be used to set up traps.
One of the key features of the game is the realistic ballistic option, which includes factors such as ball drop, wind force and blast during a test. The sniper game is played in the first-person view, while the movement and use of all other weapons are in the third-person view. When the player successfully fires a sniper shot (such as a shot in the head or a moving target), the viewfinder follows the trajectory of the ball in slow motion as the camera rotates around the ball. Characteristics include the ability to hurt an enemy so that his comrades can expose his position by coming to his rescue, detonating grenades and fuel tanks with targeted rifle fire, and shooting such powerful blows as thunder or the artillery mask the sound.
